SYNOPSIS

American Icon is a 10-minute experimental film written and directed by Zbig Rybczynski and Dorota Zglobicka. Created through the lens of this filmmaker duo—both naturalized citizens acting as fascinated observers—the film reframes the country's vast, colorful audiovisual lexicon into a hypnotic new narrative.

Featuring a cast of 120 actors, the film presents a continuous procession of distinct characters—including familiar archetypes like Uncle Sam, cowboys, soldiers, a Thanksgiving Turkey, Mickey Mouse, and everyday citizens—where each person delivers exactly one iconic phrase before passing the baton.

By recontextualizing these globally recognized soundbites, the filmmakers transform them into something entirely new. Phrases spanning from "Go ahead, make my day" and "Ask not what your country can do for you," to street slang and cinematic declarations, blend into a collective, poetic consciousness. Rather than taking sides or casting judgment, the short film holds up a mirror to a culture shaped by media, ambition, humor, and freedom.
