Inside an empty Wrocław soundstage, thirteen retired behind-the-scenes technicians reunite around a banquet table to reflect on the physical craft of Polish cinema—before costumed apparitions from their classic films sweep them into one final dance.

 

SYNOPSIS

Salto, Remember This Dance  is a documentary set entirely inside the soundstage of the historic Wrocław Feature Film Studio (WFF, later CeTA, now WFF again). The film brings together thirteen retired crew members—the dolly grips, sound operators, camera assistants, editors, makeup artists, costume managers, and stuntmen whose manual labor built Poland’s cinematic heritage. 

 

Reunited around a banquet table set with film props, the crew debates the mechanics of classic filmmaking, comparing their era to modern digital productions and Hollywood standards. Their commentary, driven by decades of uncredited experience, approaches the essence of film craft with humor and irony.

 

The production contrasts the live-action banquet with individual blue-screen interviews. Set behind each speaker are animated landscapes referencing the iconic WFF productions they helped build, including Pociąg, Czterej pancerni i pies, Historia kina w Popielawach, Baza ludzi umarłych, and Na srebrnym globie. 

 

As the veterans discuss the evolution of their industry, dancers dressed in period costumes from famous WFF films silently emerge from the shadows to serve refreshments, though the guests seem not to notice them.

 

In a finale inspired by the dance scene from Tadeusz Konwicki’s film Salto, sound engineer Henryk Szurkowski puts on dark sunglasses and steps onto the banquet table. He invites the crew to join the costumed figures in a synchronized dance to the score of Salto, culminating in Zbyszek Cybulski’s archival voiceover: „To jest Salto! Zapamiętajcie ten taniec!”.
