SYNOPSIS
In 1983, an avant-garde filmmaker from Poland accepted the Academy Award for Tango—an unprecedented 8-minute masterpiece created using 16,000 hand-painted cell mattes - and was promptly arrested outside the venue fifteen minutes later. Such an absurd reality could only belong to Zbigniew "Zbig" Rybczyński. To this day, Tango continues to shape visual culture, inspiring everything from theatrical stage adaptations and commercials to iconic music videos by Green Day, George Michael, Gotye, and Steve Lacy, while masters like Francis Ford Coppola call Zbig a “ true innovator” and identify his early breakthroughs as the absolute foundation of the digital era.
Zbig – The Real Influencer is a feature documentary exploring the life, mind, and global impact of a cinematic revolutionary. From his early days in the Polish avant-garde to crafting ground-breaking POV rigs for the cult horror film Angst, Zbig didn't just push the boundaries of film—he built the tools that keep inspiring new generations of creatives. Dominating the 1980s, he pioneered HDTV, built real-time motion-control studios for visionary works like Imagine, Steps, and The Orchestra. Moreover, as contributors to the documentary attest, Zbig's work on Midnight Mover created the precursor to the 'bullet time' effect later popularized by The Matrix.
Featuring exclusive insider access, rare archival footage, and candid interviews with major world directors, DPs, and fashion creatives (ranging from Francis Ford Coppola, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Gaspar Noé to the Creative Director of Balenciaga), the film traces how Zbig’s radical engineering laid the hidden DNA for modern visual culture.
